Fruendt records triple double
Feb. 24, 2007
It went down to the wire again, albeit for different reasons.
This time, the uncertainty wasn't if Batavia would pull out a victory over DeKalb, but if Batavia's Nick Fruendt would secure a triple-double before the final buzzer.
The Bulldogs were good on both counts, dispatching DeKalb 73-62 as Fruendt scored 22 points, dished 10 assists and pulled down 10 boards in the regular season finale.
Actually, Fruendt had a quadruple double ... if his 10 turnovers were factored in.
"Those kind of (cancel out) the assists," Fruendt said sheepishly. "It was good to get everybody involved, but I've got to take better care of the ball. We got the W, though."
The win pushed Batavia to 22-2 overall and 13-1 atop the Western Sun Conference. There were no last-second heroics needed, either. Against DeKalb in December, Batavia needed a pair of 3-pointers in the final eight seconds, including a 40-footer at the buzzer by Louis Girard, to escape with a 63-60 win.
Fruendt's 10th assist was a crowd-pleaser as he fed reserve Owen McKenna in the post for a rare basket and the student section -- which had been pleading for McKenna to enter the game -- erupted in cheers.
