Elgin woman charged in identity theft
Elgin police arrested a woman Monday on identity theft charges, alleging she used another woman's name and Social Security number since 2004 for employment purposes.
The victim, a 49-year-old Texas woman, filed a police report after she received a notice from the Internal Revenue Service that said she owed $2,554 in back taxes.
Augustina Trejo, 51, of 311 DuPage St., Apt. 3, Elgin, was charged in court Tuesday with felony identity theft, according to court records.
The victim received the notice that she had earned $61,321 from working at Hansen Plastics, 1270 Abbott Drive, Elgin, since 2004 and immediately filed a report with San Antonio police, who in turn called Elgin.
The victim told both police departments she had never worked in Elgin.
Two detectives went to the factory Monday afternoon and interviewed Trejo, who told them her name was Elvia, police said.
But after tripping up on many of the questions, she admitted she was really Augustina Trejo, police said.
Trejo said she bought the Texas woman's Social Security number after she left Mexico and used her name and number since 2004, police said.
Associate Kane County Judge Allen Cargerman set Trejo's bond at $25,000.
She was taken to the Kane County jail Tuesday afternoon and her next court date is on April 10 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
If Trejo pleads guilty or is found guilty of the identity theft charge, she is eligible for deportation.
