Man charged in Elgin robbery
Elgin police arrested the man they believe stole cash and two handguns from a tanning salon on March 12.
Charges of burglary and possession of a stolen firearm were filed in Elgin Branch Court Wednesday against Ryan J. Newcomer, 24, of 45036 Hazel Crest Drive, Sugar Grove.
When a co-owner of Sun Factory Tan, 1012 S. McLean Blvd., Elgin, arrived at his business on the morning of March 12, he found a large hole in the glass front door, shattered glass all over the floor and a 4-inch rock lying on the floor inside.
A door to an inner office was kicked in and an undisclosed amount of cash was missing from the business.
Two handguns also were missing from the business, a Colt 380 semi-automatic and a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber semi-automatic.
A dead koi was belly up in a large fish tank; it died when the cold outside air came through the broken door.
Elgin police said several detectives and patrol officers have been working on the case since the morning of March 12.
Since the investigation is ongoing, Elgin police were reluctant to release other details of the crime.
Newcomer was arrested by Geneva police at 11:31 p.m. Tuesday on a warrant that had been issued for his arrest.
Newcomer's bond was set at $12,500. He was unable to post bond and was taken Wednesday morning to the Kane County Correction Center.
His next court date is scheduled for April 10 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
