Mother charged with battering her infant son

A Carpentersville woman was accused Wednesday of battering her infant son so badly he suffered bleeding on the brain and broken ribs.

Cristian Reyes Molina, 23, of 124 Del Rio Road was charged with aggravated battery of a child.

Paramedics on Feb. 22 took the baby to Sherman Hospital, where doctors said he had suffered bleeding on the brain, bilateral retinal hemorrhaging and multiple rib fractures.

Some of the fractures were new -- some were older, police said.

Medical evidence showed some of the 13-month-old boy's ribs had been broken in the past and were in various stages of healing, police said.

Doctors said the boy's injuries were indications of shaken baby syndrome.

Molina said the baby was crying on Feb. 21 or Feb. 22, and she shook him, according to police. When he continued crying, she threw him on a bed, police said.

He stopped crying when he hit the bed, and although his eyes were open, he then had a blank stare, police said.

Carpentersville police said the boy is now recovering at another medical facility. Doctors say his progress is going well, but it is too early yet to determine if he will have permanent injuries.

Carpentersville police Wednesday were unable to say what happened to at least one other child who had been living in the home.

Kane County prosecutors sought $200,000 bond because Molina posed a flight risk; Judge Allen Cargerman set bond at $50,000.

Molina is being held in the Kane County jail with a March 11 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.
