Too many chiefs on the Dist. 214 payroll

My wife and I enjoyed a student performance of "Footloose" at Buffalo Grove High School over the winter holidays. This a great way to reach out to the community and provide growth experiences for the students.

During the intermission, I perused the program booklet and noticed the following administrative positions: superintendent; principal; two assistant principals; two associate principals; two deans of students

Good grief! Are you sure you don't need more highly paid administrators with hefty benefits to run Buffalo Grove High School, as well as each of the other high schools in District 214?

It is now time for me to "teach" you a lesson. This is Economics 101 from Professor Lamb -- yes, I have been a college teacher.

You must "learn" that excessive overstaffing of people with bloated salaries and benefits translates to higher property taxes for everyone. Being a board member does not provide an avenue to promote self-interest, private business concerns and egos. "Tighten your belt" and stop being self-serving and greedy.

The newspapers are inundated with teachers demanding annual salary increases (which translate into annual tax increases) in compensation for credentials that are easy to get. An illustration of the quality of education degrees is on the wall of the third stall of the men's room in Conklin Hall, Bowling Green State University, where "Answer Man" declares: "If you want a degree in education, just pull off some paper from the roll below!"

Since I have observed many school teachers and administrators, I am of the opinion that most of them don't know what's involved in a day's work. Far from being overworked and underpaid, the exact opposite is true: they are overpaid for the hours of work they put in each day.

I have observed incompetence and financial irresponsibility in the Governor's, Secretary of State's, and Cook County President's offices.

All I am asking is that you recognize and accept fiscal responsibility on your part as a school board member.

Lesson completed -- that will be 50 cents, please. Credit cards are not accepted.
