Current Events

Eugene Klein initiated discussion of the negative campaign for the 14th Congressional District seat. Marcus offered reasons why he thought Oberweis lost: misleading attacks, his "extreme" positions, the district's changing demographics and President Bush's lack of popularity. Jim Kerrigan offered the opinion that Oberweis turned people off with excessive phone calls and mailings. Many in the audience expressed agreement with this sentiment.

Other topics discussed were former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer's escapades with a prostitute; progress on State Rep. Jack Franks' proposed addition to the state constitution regarding recall elections; Agent Orange; confiscation of Drew Peterson's weapons despite the fact he's not been charged with a crime; the Space Shuttle Endeavour; asbestos at Oak Street Beach; rising food prices; the bank robbery at Huntley's Castle Bank and why $1 million the state intended to give to a church was received a school, why Illinois hasn't gotten the money back and why taxpayer dollars are going to a church in the first place.
