10-minute scoreless drought buries ISU
Dayton went on a 17-0 second-half run to break open a close game en route to a 55-48 victory over host Illinois State in an NIT second-round game Monday.
The Flyers trailed 32-28 with 17:03 left before Illinois State (25-10) went more than 10 minutes without scoring. The Redbirds missed 12 straight shots before Dinma Odiakosa's basket with 6:38 left ended the drought. Odiakosa led the Redbirds with 14 points.
Illinois State closed the gap to 51-47 with 57 seconds left, but couldn't get closer. The Redbirds shot just 26 percent in the second half.
Brian Roberts led Dayton (23-10) with 16 points. The Flyers go on the road to face Ohio State (21-13) on Wednesday.
Ohio State 73, California 56: Jamar Butler scored 20 points and spurred a 17-2 first-half run with three 3-pointers to lead Ohio State past California in an NIT second-round game in Columbus, Ohio.
The Buckeyes (21-13) were helped along by an emotional return to their old home court -- 52-year-old St. John Arena.
The Buckeyes, who now advance to host a quarterfinal game against Dayton (23-10), were led in scoring by Kosta Koufos with 17 points. Othello Hunter grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to go with 11 points.
Jerome Randle had 18 points and Ryan Anderson, averaging 21.4 a game, added 11 for Cal, making its first appearance in Columbus since Dec. 23, 1949.
