Friday's NCAA heroes, zeros

Friday's heroes

Stephen Curry, Davidson: If LeBron James, a guest of the Wildcats, was the No. 1 player inside Ford Field, then Curry was 1A. The swift- and sweet-shooting Curry outscored Wisconsin 22-20 in the second half to turn a halftime tie into a 73-56 rout.

Jason Richards, Davidson: The Barrington flash scored 11 points and handed out 13 assists that led to 33 more points. Oh, and he committed no turnovers. His 10th-seeded Wildcats are the first double-digit seed to reach the Elite Eight since George Mason. Just sayin'.

Derrick Rose, Memphis: Chicago's finest might soon become America's finest. Playing at less than 100 percent, the freshman point guard still amassed a career-high 27 points with 4 assists and 4 rebounds in a 92-74 whipping of Michigan State.

Friday's zeros

Big Ten's finest: Adieu, Badgers and Spartans. Not suggesting that Davidson and Memphis made you seem slow, but you're only now realizing what happened to you.

Sleeping pill companies: What brutally uncompetitive games. When's the last time four Sweet Sixteen games were decided by at least 15 points? Gotta go back to March 12, 1965, when all eight games were played the same day and Princeton, Michigan, San Francisco and UCLA all won big.

Drew Neitzel, Michigan State: Never thought the terrific senior guard would go out this way: 6 points on 2-for-8 shooting. And he didn't score until 1:47 remained.
