Police: Man beat wife with hammer
A Maine Township man hit his wife in the head several times with a hammer over the weekend, leaving her hospitalized in grave condition, authorities said.
Djuro Milesic, 55, of 8923 N. Knight Ave., on Monday was being held on a $500,000 bond on charges of attempted murder, aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery.
Milesic is accused of attacking his wife as she slept on the couple's couch Friday night.
Slavojka Milesic, 47, on Monday remained hospitalized at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Detectives have said her prognosis is grave, but a hospital spokeswoman couldn't confirm her condition.
Milesic, who is unemployed, apparently reported his behavior to authorities later, police said.
An adult son was sleeping in the apartment at the time, Cook County sheriff's police spokeswoman Penny Mateck said.
Another bond hearing is scheduled for today, when a Serbian interpreter will be available, at the Skokie courthouse.
