Inside look at NCAA: Day 3

Day 3 heroes

Brook Lopez, Stanford The 7-footer used his 4-inch height advantage over Dwight Burke to bounce in a 6-foot leaner from the baseline with 1.3 seconds left for an 82-81 overtime win over Marquette. Lopez finished with 30 points.

Washington State's defense Notre Dame came into Saturday's game averaging 80.2 points this season. The Irish exited after scoring just 41 points against the Cougars' helping man-to-man -- their lowest total since Dec. 7, 1983, against Northwestern.

Drew Neitzel, Michigan State The senior guard scored 12 of his game-high 21 points in the final 6:30 to turn a 1-point lead into a 65-54 "upset" of fourth-seeded Pittsburgh.

Joe Mazzulla, West Virginia The Mountaineers' backup point guard nearly pulled off a triple-double with 13 points and career bests in rebounds (11) and assists (8) as West Virginia knocked out second-seeded Duke by a 73-67 count.

Greg Stiemsma, Wisconsin In 14 dominant minutes off the bench, the 6-foot-11 senior pounded undersized Kansas State for a career-high 14 points to go with 7 rebounds as the Badgers reached the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2005.

Day 3 zeros

Duke After doing no worse than the Sweet Sixteen from 1998-2006, coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Blue Devils go home the first weekend for the second straight year. And what's with all the flopping and flailing by Kyle Singler, Jon Scheyer and the others? Just play the game next year. And grab some rebounds.

Kansas State's shooters The Wildcats went 0-for-14 from 3-point range in their 72-55 loss to Wisconsin. That included 4 misses from Michael Beasley, who was otherwise great (23 points, 13 rebounds) in his last college game.

Purdue freshmen All-Big Ten picks Robbie Hummel and E'Twaun Moore were primarily responsible for a 12-of-38 shooting effort by the Boilers' four rookies, which led to an 85-78 loss to Xavier.
