Memphis, UCLA roll
Even the free throws were dropping for Memphis as the Tigers began what they hope will be another championship run through the Conference USA tournament.
Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 17 points, and No. 2 Memphis made 71 percent of its free throws in a 75-56 victory Thursday night on its home floor against Tulane (17-15).
The Tigers (31-1) came in shooting 58.7 percent from the line, one of the worst percentages in Division I. It's the most obvious weakness on a team with few.
"I know that makes everybody mad because they want this to be the centerpiece of our team, our free throw shooting," Memphis coach John Calipari said. "These guys will tell you, I've never worried about it."
Even Joey Dorsey (36.4 percent this season from the line) finished 4-for-6 and drew a loud cheer from the crowd after hitting 3 of his first 4.
Memphis will play either Southern Mississippi or No. 4 seed UCF, who played later Thursday night.
Xavier 74, Dayton 65: Josh Duncan scored 16 points and 10th-ranked Xavier limited Dayton to 5 baskets in the final 12 minutes of an Atlantic 10 tournament game in Atlantic City, N.J.
C.J. Anderson added 15 points as the top-seeded Musketeers (27-5) beat Dayton (21-10) for the third time this season.
UCLA 88, California 66: Third-ranked UCLA buried California (16-15) under a barrage of 3-pointers to start the second half and advanced to the Pac-10 semifinals in Los Angeles.
Darren Collison scored 19 points and Josh Shipp 18. UCLA (29-3) had its best 3-point shooting game of the season, hitting 14 of 25.
