Core Strength and Toning: This 45-minute class will concentrate on strengthening and toning "core" muscles, including abdominal, oblique and back muscles. This class will include traditional and nontraditional toning exercises, utilizing some strength equipment, and welcomes all fitness levels, ages 16 and over. From 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to April 16. The cost is $40 for residents, $50 for nonresidents.
Kids Safety & Self Defense: Ages 6 to 13 can learn to recognize, avoid and escape from dangerous people and situations, with over 25 discussion topics, and 25 simple, practical, self-defense maneuvers. This class is taught in a fun non-threatening way by a certified instructor. Parents are welcome to observe for free. From 5 to 6:15 p.m. Thursdays and March 13 and 20. The cost of this class is $52 for residents, $59 for nonresidents.
Track Stars: Ages 7 to 14 can learn track and field fundamentals with an emphasis on "Fun Conditioning." Proper techniques for running and other common events will be taught. Running shoes are strongly recommended. The track will be closed to the public during the class, which runs from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, March 6 to April 17. The cost is $54 for residents, $63 for nonresidents.
Festa Italiana-Rat Pack: The Chicago Rat Pack re-creates performances of Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Dean Martin. Hosted by Frank Pizani, the Festa Italiana will remind participants of Las Vegas during the '60s, when the Rat Pack was in their prime. Participants will get a glass of complimentary wine, minestrone soup, pizza bread, steak parmigiana, pasta marinara, Italian-style green beans, spumoni for dessert and a beverage. This trip is for ages 50 and over, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The cost is $48 for residents, $56 for nonresidents.
Bunny Basket: Children ages 6 to 10 will be supplied with all materials necessary to make a bunny-themed Easter Basket from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Not only will students walk away with a basket, but the park district will also fill it with goodies. Items included are a stuffed bunny, bunny book, and candy. The cost is $18 for residents, $23 for nonresidents.
Baby sitter's Training: Ages 11 to 15 can learn to care for infants and school-age children from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Topics covered will include responding to emergencies, making decisions, communicating with parents, safety and hygiene issues, feeding and diapering. Students will need to bring a sack lunch. There is a fee of $90 for residents, $99 for nonresidents.
Czech Plaza Restaurant: Ages 50 and over can take a trip to this restaurant, which specializes in light, flaky pastry desserts from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 11. Lunch is not included in the fee. The cost is $12 for residents, $15 for nonresidents.
St. Patrick's Day Breakfast: Celebrate St. Patrick's Day by wearing green and bringing a breakfast dish from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 13. Participants should register at the front desk to let the park district know what they would like to bring. The cost is $4
Easter Egg Hunt: An Easter Egg hunt will be held for ages 8 and under beginning at 10 a.m. sharp on March 15 at Forest View Park, 513 Forest View Drive, Lindenhurst. The hunt will start with the youngest age group and make its way to the 8-year-olds. Each age group will have their own hunting area. The eggs will be filled with candy and prize tickets. Children will also be able to have their pictures taken with the bunny for $1 per child. No registration is required for this event. In case of rain or unsafe weather, the hunt will take place at 10 a.m. on March 22.
Easter Has Sprung: Participants ages 8 to 12 will use paints, stickers, scrapbook paper and a variety of other supplies to create a bunny sign to welcome Easter, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 19. The cost is $30 for residents, $37 for nonresidents.
See "Swan Lake": Take a trip to see "Swan Lake" performed by one of Russia's most distinguished dance companies from 11:30 to 5 p.m. March 22 at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago. The trip will stop for a light lunch on the way. This trip is for ages 7 and over. The cost is $68 for residents, $78 for nonresidents
Spring Break Camp: Kids in kindergarten through sixth grade can spend spring break with the Lindenhurst Park District, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with extended care hours from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at no extra charge, March 24 to 28. Sign up for one day or for all five. No same day registration will be accepted. Bring a lunch and a morning and afternoon snack. Campers will take part in activities like pancake breakfast, going to the movies, a Jelly Belly tour, a Lincoln Park Zoo trip and a pizza party.
Spring Break Chess Camp: This camp is designed for both beginners and experienced young players, ages 6 to 13. Each day will include an interactive teaching period and guided practice time. There will also be a chess tournament and other competitions with prizes. Each camper will take home a chess set and an award. Bring money for snacks. This class is for ages 6 to 13, from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday, March 24 to March 28. The cost is $120 for residents, $132 for nonresidents.
Spring Easter Luncheon: Ages 50 and up can celebrate the coming of spring with a catered lunch, consisting of chicken breasts with stuffing, pepper steak with rice, mashed potatoes with gravy, steamed California blend veggies, fresh tossed salad, taffy apple salad, Hawaiian fruit salad, tapioca pudding, rolls and butter, at noon March 27. Play games and enjoy visiting with others. The cost is $10 per person.
Freestyle Motocross Trip: Freestyle Motocross, owned by Live Nation, the leading freestyle motocross tour in the world, features athletes performing aerial acrobatics while clearing 70-foot gaps and climbing up to three stories high on off-road motorcycles. This trip is for all ages from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. March 29, and includes time to eat dinner at the Bradley Center. The cost is $32 for residents, $38 for nonresidents.
Themed Birthday Parties: The Lindenhurst Park District offers Craft, Hawaiian, Bug, Friendship and Teddy Bear Picnic-themed birthday party packages. For more information, call (847) 356-6011.
Men's Over Open Gym: Men's 25 and Over Open Gym is held from 7 to 9 p.m. every Wednesday night, year round, at the Lindenhurst Park District gym. Fee is paid at the door. Bring proper ID to confirm residency and age.
Women's Open Gym: Women's Open Gym is for ages 18 and over from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. Must show I.D. The cost is $3 for residents, $5 for nonresidents, paid at the door.
Senior Aerobics: Ages 50 and over can keep fit and active with low-impact exercise set to a fitness video from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the Senior Room. Registration is not required. The fee is $1 per visit.
Cards and Games: Come play a card game or board games at 1 p.m. Thursdays in the Senior Room. Participants may bring a favorite game if they like. Free for those 50 and over.
Mahjongg: The ancient Asian tile game of mahjongg is played at 9:45 a.m. every Monday in the Senior Room for anyone who is interested. Participants who have a game are asked to bring it in.
Senior Coffee Club: Relax and enjoy some coffee, doughnuts and company from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. the first and third Monday of the year in the Senior Room. Walk-ins are welcome; registration is not necessary. Bring a friend. For ages 50 and over on. It's $1 per visit.
