All six stations fight Elgin fire
Crews from all Elgin fire stations on Saturday morning battled a blaze at a bearing plant for 40 minutes.
No one was injured and fire officials were investigating late Saturday.
At 7:36 a.m., a fire alarm at the NTN Bearing Corp. plant at 1500 Holmes Ave. went off.
Smoke billowed from the building, prompting calls from motorists on nearby Interstate 90.
The lines "were filled up by phone calls from people on the tollway," said Elgin Fire Department Captain Dick Cummings. "The entire fire department went there -- all six stations."
Cummings said the blaze was put out in about 40 minutes.
A series of electrical motors and pumps were on fire, but damage estimates were not immediately available. The fire was near a kerosene tank, but it did not catch on fire.
Cummings said there were some workers on duty at the time, but he did not know how many.
A phone message left at the Elgin plant was not returned Saturday.
According to the firm's Web site, NTN was founded in 1918 and was one of the world's largest bearing producers for industrial and automotive markets. It has locations around the world, the site states.
Elgin crews also were assisted from officials from Carpentersville, East Dundee, Pingree Grove, South Elgin and West Dundee.
