Wheeling High gets jazzy at festival

Wheeling High School captured the Grand Championship title for the 2008 "Jazz in the Meadows" festival, held Feb. 23 at Rolling Meadows High School.

The outstanding soloists from each class were:

• Junior High Class: Mac Logan of Cooper Middle School, Buffalo Grove.

• Class 1A: Ethan Haywood of Illinois Valley Central High School, Chillicothe, Ill.

• Class 2A: Gabe Medd of Iowa City High School.

• Class 3A: Kevin Jacobi of John Hersey High School, Arlington Heights.

• Class 4A: Jessica Lee of Carl Sandburg High School, Schaumburg.

• Large School Combo Class: Patrick Kennedy of Fremd High School, Palatine.

• Small School Combo Class: Blake Beiber of Webster Groves High School, Missouri.

In the various class divisions, the following schools were award winners:

• Junior High Class: Third Place was a tie between Gemini in Niles, and Thomas in Arlington Heights.

• Middle Schools: First Place, Cooper Middle School, Buffalo Grove; Second Place, Memorial Park Middle School, Fort Wayne.

• Combo (Large): First Place, Schaumburg High School

• Second Place, Libertyville High School;

• Third Place, Eastview High School in Apple Valley, Minn.

• Combo (Small): First Place, Webster Groves High School

• Second Place, John Hersey High School;

• Third Place, MacArthur High School in Decatur.

• Class 1A: First Place, Illinois Valley Central High School

• Second Place, Marmion Academy/Rosary High School, Aurora.

• Third Place, Shawano High School, Wis.;

• Class 2A: First Place, MacArthur High School, Decatur; Second Place, Valley High School; Third Place, Iowa City West High School, Iowa.

• Class 3A: First Place, Wheeling High School; Second Place, Eastview High School; Third Place, Hersey High School.

• Class 4A: First Place, Penn High School in Mishawaka, Ind.; Second Place, Lincoln-Way East High School, Frankfort, Ill.; Third Place, a tie between Warren Township in Gurnee and Sandburg High School.

• Second Band Class: First Place, Hersey High School, Second Place, Valley High School; Third Place, Bolingbrook High School.
