Stewardship and the almighty dollar
This is a P.S. to my letter concerning church tithing, which you printed in the Dec. 31 Fence Post. It's also a thanks to those people who responded to it or privately reacted to it.
My church mails out a packet of collection envelopes as do many other churches. I just took a survey of those included in the mailing for eight Sundays.
This mailing contains eight Sunday envelopes which have preprinted suggested amounts ranging from $15 to $50, plus a blank for other amounts. We also have regular separate envelopes for parish mortgage, utilities, sharing parish, parish school and one special for the church in Europe. But wait, there's more.
I also got separate envelopes for Easter in addition to the regular Sunday envelope, and others for Ash Wednesday, Easter flowers, Holy Thursday and even Good Friday. The only bet they missed was an envelope for going to confession -- so you could really pay for your sins.
Don't tell me that "stewardship" isn't about the almighty dollar.
