Des Plaines closer to red light cameras

Des Plaines aldermen on Monday night voted to pursue plans for red-light cameras. Police Chief James Prandini now has the go-ahead to look at choosing a vendor and look at which intersections would be best to post the cameras. These plans would still need the city council's OK. Prandini said the cameras will help make intersections safer, but some aldermen had questions. Fourth Ward Alderman Jean Higgason asked whether there's evidence that the cameras increase crashes since people are more likely to stop suddenly. Prandini said he's seen contradictory studies. Fifth Ward Alderman Carla Brookman said she worried the cameras are more about making money than improving safety.
