Fire displaces Palatine condo residents

No injuries were reported after a fire broke out Monday afternoon in part of a Palatine condo building, authorities said.

The blaze did, however, leave two units severely damaged and all 12 at least temporarily uninhabitable.

The Palatine Fire Department responded shortly before 1 p.m. to the fire at the Beacon Cove Condominiums at 1327-1319 N. Winslowe Drive, authorities said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found flames and heavy smoke coming through the roof of the three-story building. They called for assistance when they saw the fire's potential to spread.

A total of 37 firefighters from nearly 10 fire departments responded to the scene and had the fire under control within 20 minutes, authorities said. Palatine police helped to evacuate the affected and adjoining apartment buildings.

Palatine Fire Capt. Doug Hoyt said investigators were still working to determine the cause of the fire. No damage estimates were immediately available.

The American Red Cross, Palatine Emergency Management Agency, Village of Palatine Neighborhood Services and police social workers provided assistance to displaced residents.

Several pets were also rescued.
