Photo I.D. should be shown for voting

In response to Cynthia Tucker's Oct. 4 column regarding the law requiring picture I.D. for voters. It seems to me that everyone should be required to show I.D. so that it is known they are eligible to vote.

In Illinois, seniors can get a free state I.D. at any state driver's licensing station. With worldwide terrorism and illegal immigrants crossing our borders with impunity, everyone in the U.S. should be required to have a picture I.D. and have to prove citizenship to get one. Even the poor have occasion to cash payroll or welfare checks which requires a photo I.D. Schools issue photo I.D. to students and staff to ensure no breach of security occurs.

So what is Cynthia's real reason for taking such a stand? It appears it is purely political, a way of bashing conservatives and elevating liberals in the public opinion.
