Author to read, sign debut book

Books at Sunset welcomes the Elgin native and city councilman Mike Powers at 7 p.m. today.

He will read from and sign copies of his debut book, "All-American Stories: Elgin Myths and Memories."

Powers' book is described as an evocative look at growing up during the 1960s and early 1970s, a remembrance of Friday night basketball games at Elgin High School and Saturday afternoon outings at the Crocker Theater, among many other stories.

Special guests at the event include Powers' all-state basketball teammate Derrick Mayes and 1972 Olympian Brian Oldfield, who will be making a rare public appearance.

Oldfield was a media personality and world record holder in the shot put. He appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in 1975. He also sparred with Muhammad Ali and traded barbs with Don Rickles.

Refreshments will be served. Giveaways with every book purchase.
