Elgin worker accused of stealing woman's identity

A Chicago woman was accused Tuesday of using a stolen identity to get a job in Elgin, police said.

Police found out when a 20-year-old California woman recently received a letter from the Internal Revenue Service stating she owed back taxes on $49,832.67 she earned while working from 2005 to 2007 at the Sanfilippo Co. in Elgin.

Marcelina Castenada, 30, of 4650 N. Monticello Ave., Unit 1, was charged with Class 2 felony financial identity theft, according to court records.

In police reports filed by the woman in Long Beach, Calif., and Elk Grove Village, she stated she never worked for the company and had never worked in Illinois.

Two Elgin detectives went to Sanfillipo & Son on Tuesday.

The human relations department called in Castaneda, who identified herself as the 20-year-old victim and said she didn't know her Social Security number, police said.

During police questioning, Castenada's story broke down and she admitted she had been using the victim's name, date of birth and Social Security number for employment since 2005, police said.

Castenada said she paid $550 for the California woman's personal information, police said.

Castenada said in court Wednesday she was not a citizen and Kane County Circuit Judge Susan Boles told her if she pleaded guilty or is found guilty of the charge, she could be deported.

Castenada posted a $4,000 bond Wednesday and was released with a March 3 court date at the Kane County Judicial Center.
