NIU plans to beef up security Monday

Northern Illinois University officials are planning to beef up security when students return to campus Monday -- the first day of class since the Valentine's Day attack that killed five and wounded 16.

"There will be a significant increase in security," said NIU Police Chief Donald Grady at a news conference Wednesday in DeKalb.

Grady declined to specify the additional security measures that will be taken other than to say more police officers will be patrolling the campus. The officers will come from several law enforcement agencies, he said.

Grady said the heightened security is aimed at both ensuring the campus is safe and making students and faculty feel safe.
