Swisher center of attention
TUCSON, Ariz. -- It didn't take long for Nick Swisher to make an impact with the White Sox.
After coming over in an off-season trade from the Oakland Athletics, Swisher was the first hitter to come to the plate in Monday's intrasquad game.
He singled off Gavin Floyd, but Swisher was the target of general manager Kenny Williams' first spring outburst.
"We run the bases in Chicago,'' Williams screamed as Swisher took his time running down the first-base line.
In his final at-bat, Swisher reached on an infield single against Scott Linebrink. Dropping down for a pitch in the dirt, Swisher tapped the one-hopper toward third base.
"Just like Ichiro,'' he said.
Anderson in camp: The White Sox on Monday agreed to a minor-league contract with relief pitcher Matt Anderson.
Armed with a 100-mph fastball, Anderson was selected by Detroit with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1997 draft. The right-hander pitched for the Tigers from 1998-2003, saving 22 games in 2001.
Anderson pitched for the Colorado Rockies in 2005, his last season in the major leagues.
In 2002, Anderson participated in a charity octopus-throwing contest at a Detroit Red Wings game. He tore a muscle under his armpit during the event and never seemed to fully recover.
Easing in: After dislocating his right shoulder in spring training last year, catcher Toby Hall endured a miserable season with the Sox, batting .207 with no home runs and 3 RBI in 38 games.
Hall said his shoulder is healthy, but he isn't expected to play in an exhibition game until next week.
"I've been pretty limited so far, just doing some things with the shoulder,'' he said. "Better safe than sorry.''
Good to go: Mark Buehrle was held out of Monday's intrasquad game with shoulder soreness, but the left-handed starter said he's fine.
"It seems like everybody's making a pretty big deal about it,'' he said. "Maybe it'll be like 2005, when some people were talking about my rotator cuff. We won the World Series, so I'll take that again.''
Under control: Manager Ozzie Guillen was pleased with the pitching in Monday's intrasquad game, especially Gavin Floyd's 2 solid innings.
There was only 1 walk in the 4-inning scrimmage, and Guillen wants to see the trend continue.
"We'll be on top of everybody with pitching,'' Guillen said. "Throw strikes. I can live with guys getting hit. I can't tolerate any more guys walking people and not being around the plate. It's something we didn't do right last year. We weren't attacking the strike zone.''
Around the horn: Joe Crede is scheduled to play in today's intrasquad game. The third baseman missed most of last season with back surgery. … Ozzie Guillen still doesn't know when second baseman Danny Richar is going to report to camp. … In his first at-bat with the White Sox, Alexei Ramirez hit a deep drive that was caught at the left-field fence.
