Register for programs at the adult reference desk or call the library. Patrons must register in person for programs requiring a fee. Programs may be canceled due to lack of registration.
Those requiring special accommodations to attend any library programs should contact community services two weeks in advance.
Vote for book awards: Between now and Sunday, children in kindergarten through third grade who have read five or more nominated titles may vote for the Monarch Award.
Children in fourth through eighth grade who have read three or more titles nominated may vote to choose the winner of the Rebecca Caudill Award. Voting will take place at the Youth Services Desk and should not duplicate a vote placed in school. Nominated titles are available for checkout at the front of the Youth Services Department.
Flower & Garden Show Trip: Spend the day among the flowers and gardens at Rosemont's Stephens Convention Center. The library will provide coach bus transportation and entrance to the show. Register at the Adult Reference Desk. If less than 30 patrons register by today, the trip will be canceled and payment returned. The trip will leave at 8:30 a.m. March 8. There is a cost of $28.
Special performers: These programs are free and fill quickly. Tickets are required for all adults and their accompanying children 2 years old and older.
Tickets can be acquired either in person at the youth services desk or in limited numbers, online beginning 10 a.m. the day of registration.
For online tickets, visit the Web site at www.lvdl.org and go to Library Events. Tickets reserved online must be picked up from the youth services desk within seven business days.
• George Washington Follies will begin at 1 p.m. today. With the help of audience members and famous leaders of long ago, George Washington decides how to lead the new country known as the United States of America.
• Circus Boy will perform at 10:30 a.m. April 3. Bobby Hunt returns with his one-man circus act, in which he balances, juggles and pulls unsuspecting audience members up to help him. Registration begins March 3.
Novel Thoughts: Fourth- to sixth-graders can read books, form an opinion and join a discussion at 7 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month in the Conference Room.

Friends monthly meetings: The Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday and March 20 in Meeting Room A. All are welcome to attend.
Royalty and genealogy: Join Jeff Bockman for "I Cannot Tell a Lie, I Chopped Down My Royal Family Tree," an overview on how to use Royalty Sources from both a genealogical and historical perspective at 1 p.m. Thursday. He'll also discuss using history, timelines, evaluation of sources and personal ethics.
Friday Fun Faire: Three-year-olds through kindergartners can enjoy a story and make a craft. Adult supervision is required.

Recipes to Die For: Chef Jonathan Bean will present a look at how to make dishes featured in several mystery novels at Lake Villa District Library at 2 p.m. Sunday. The recipes will include creamy fish chowder from "The Body in the Basement" by Katherine Hall Page; Thai beef salad from "Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, and Crime" by Tamar Myers; Chinese beef stir fry from "The Cereal Murders" by Diane Mott Davidson; and flan from "Custard's Last Stand: a Pennsylvania Dutch Mystery with Recipes" by Tamar Myers.
All of the recipes are adaptations of what is found in the books. This program will cost $3 per person and it is not necessary to be a current Friends' member to attend. Register at the Adult Reference Desk. Registration is limited to 50.
Shop & Share: The Friends of the Lake Villa District Library will hold a Shop & Share fundraising program from Feb. 25 to 27 at all Jewel-Osco Stores. When participants shop at Jewel-Osco on one of those days, 5 percent of the total purchases, excluding tax, will be donated by Jewel-Osco to the organization. Shop & Share slips are available at the Circulation Desk.
Little Listeners: These programs are intended to coach parents and caregivers in supporting the skills needed for children to acquire language through the use of rhymes, stories and language-building activities.
Little Listeners is designed for one-on-one interaction between child and adult partner; no other siblings are allowed. Registration is under way. Children must be the proper age by March 4.
• Little Listeners A: For ages 3 to 17 months: 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays, March 4 to 25; 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to 26; 1:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 6 to 27.
• Little Listeners B: For ages 15 to 28 months: 1:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 to 25; 9:30 a.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to 26; 6:30 p.m. Thursdays March 6 to 27.
• Little Listeners C: For ages 2 to 3 years: 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, March 4 to 25; 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 5 to 26; 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, March 6 to 27.
Lakes Literary League: All writers, published or not, are encouraged to attend at 7 p.m. March 6. Those with writing to share are encouraged to bring it. Drop off and pick up copies of writing at the Adult Reference Desk.
Adult Book Discussion: The Adult Book Discussion meets at 10 a.m. the second Saturday of each month in the library's Wilton Room. Books are available at the Circulation Desk the month before the discussion. Refreshments are served, and new members or visitors are always welcome. On March 8, discuss "How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life" by Mameve Medwed.

Parenting Power: A new series of programs aimed at the needs of today's parents and child care providers is being offered at the library. Registration is required.
bull; Dr. Phelan's 1-2-3 Magic: Renowned author and clinical psychologist Thomas Phelan, Ph.D., will present his award-winning program on managing children's behavior at 7 p.m. March 12. The system of six methods provides parents, teachers and anyone involved with child care techniques for managing children ages 2 to 12 without arguing, yelling or spanking.
bull; 1 Grocery Bag -- 5 Dinners: Chef Carol Mackey will show how one grocery bag can provide five dinners that are delicious, easy to prepare and perfect for busy families, at 6:30 p.m. March 13. Registration is limited to 50.
bull; What Does Your Teenager Know That You Don't?: Join Donna Bast, author of "Teens and Computers #8230; What's a Parent to Do?" and discover the ins and outs of social networking sites, chat rooms, IMing and more, at 7 p.m. March 18.
Internet for Beginners: Internet for Beginners will begin at 1 p.m. March 12. Join an enjoyable and instructive lesson on basic Internet searching. Register at the adult reference desk or by calling (847) 356-7711.
Lewis and Clark's River: "Life on Lewis and Clark's River" is a slide presentation by John Lynn that covers the same journey the Lewis Clark Expedition made 200 years ago: 740 miles of the scenic and historic Upper Missouri River by canoe from its source at Three Forks, Montana to its confluence with the Yellowstone River. At 11:30 a.m. March 12.
Finding Your Irish Roots: Join Kathy O'Leary for a presentation on Irish genealogy at 10:30 a.m. March 15. Along with information on civil registration, censuses, church records and census substitutes, O'Leary will cover information on Irish libraries, government offices and county family history societies.
Homework Help for Teens: The library's new "Homework Help for Teens" Web page provides links to sites and subscription databases to help teens with their homework. The library pays for a license that make subscription databases available to patrons at the library or from patrons' homes. To try it, visit www.lvdl.org.
New database: Lake Villa District Library now has access to Gale Virtual Reference Library. The database provides access to coverage on a variety of study topics that can be downloaded in PDF format, printed, emailed and translated into eight languages. Stop by the Adult Reference Desk for details.
Tax Forms and Information: Although AARP is unable to provide tax help to seniors at Lake Villa District Library this year, the library does have tax forms available in the lobby.

Read to Feed: The children of Lake Villa and Lindenhurst demonstrated their generosity once again. Through the Winter Reading Program, 230 children tracked their time spent reading and raised money to assist in the efforts of Heifer International, an organization that provides "living loans" of animals to impoverished families around the world. Stop by the Youth Department during February to learn the total amount donated.
