Fire district offers winter safety tips
The recent heavy snows and winter weather can create several challenges for local residents, businesses, and fire departments in the event of a fire.
The South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District encourages residents to take a few extra moments to safeguard their families and property.
• Clear a 36-inch radius around your nearest fire hydrant. Snow plows can inadvertently block the fire hydrants making it difficult to locate and/or operate the hydrants in the event of a fire. South Elgin has approximately 1,300 fire hydrants and the district needs the help of residents to make sure each one of these is accessible if needed.
• Make sure all exit doors, basement escape windows, and other emergency egress means are unencumbered by snow. Remember, these exits should be easily opened by all occupants of your home or business. Many people don't remember to clear off their window well covers or other emergency egress doors that are not normally used as an entrance/exit.
• Be alert to slip and fall hazards created by the snow and ice. The daytime thawing often results in nighttime freezing.
• Use extreme caution while on frozen ponds and rivers. Always supervise children who are playing on the ice. The snow actually helps to "insulate" the ice, making it less stable.
With more snow and dropping temperatures in the forecast, it is important for citizens to take action now to help keep the community safe. These and other winter safety and prevention tips can be found at www.southelgin.com under the South Elgin Fire District Fire Prevention Tab.
