Daily Herald's sports coverage receives national recognition
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Daily Herald's Sports section collected top-20 honors in the annual national contest judged by members of the Associated Press Sports Editors.
In the APSE contest for newspaper Sports sections up to 250,000 circulation, the Daily Herald received honorable mention recognition for its daily section, placing it among the top 20 overall.
Also, Daily Herald Sports Writer Mike Spellman is a top-10 writing finalist for his golf coverage, and winners will receive their awards in June at the APSE convention in Minneapolis.
"We're honored by this recognition in the industry," said Daily Herald Sports Editor Tom Quinlan. "We have a talented staff devoted to great coverage from the preps to the pros. This is such a competitive market, and our readers expect great coverage."
In the Daily Herald's division, the top 10 daily winners were: Buffalo News; Contra Costa Times; Des Moines Register; Detroit News; The Record (Hackensack, N.J.); The Times Picayune (New Orleans); The Palm Beach Post; Salt Lake Tribune; Seattle Times; and Tampa Tribune.
Other winners among Chicago area newspapers include: Aurora Beacon (daily), Naperville Sun (daily and Sunday), and the Northwest Herald (Crystal Lake, daily and Sunday) for papers under 40,000 in circulation.
In the largest category for newspapers with more than 250,000 circulation, the Chicago Tribune received top-10 daily honors and the Chicago Sun-Times was top 10 for its Sunday section, as well as honorable mention for its daily section and special section entries.
