Update on the survivors
One NIU shooting victim was released from the hospital Tuesday; three remain in area hospitals.
Lauren Debrauwere of Lake Barrington: A news release Tuesday from Northwestern Memorial Hospital reported she remained in fair condition.
Brian Karpes, 27, Rolling Meadows: Was released Tuesday from St. Anthony Hospital in Rockford. He received five wounds in Thursday's incident and underwent surgery that same day. His former mother-in-law, Joane McLeod of Hoffman Estates, said one bullet passed completely through Karpes' chest from front to back, missing his heart by less than an inch. The impact of that shot caused bruising and swelling on the side of his head, which kept him from speaking for a while. But his speech is expected to return, she said.
Maria Ruiz Santana, 19, Elgin: Remained in serious condition Tuesday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, after being upgraded Saturday. She suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and torso.
Sherman Yau, 20, Naperville: Remained in fair condition Tuesday after being upgraded Saturday. Yau was brought to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with a single handgun wound to his chest.
