Lipinski, Shock likely headed to victory

Democratic Rep. Dan Lipinski edged out three primary challengers in a district that covers Chicago's Southwest side and suburbs, while exits by two veteran downstate GOP congressmen set up other dramatic battles heading into the fall elections.

With 56 percent of precincts reporting in the 3rd Congressional District, Lipinski had 35,327 votes, or 55 percent, and his closest challenger, attorney Mark Pera had 15,020 votes, or 23 percent. Arthur Jones and Michael Hawkins sought the GOP nomination, with Hawkins holding a significant early lead.

Other battles shaped up in some of Illinois' most reliably GOP districts.

Republicans were asked to choose the candidates who will try to hold the seats of Reps. Ray LaHood and Jerry Weller in November.

In the 11th Congressional District, Weller, of Morris, is stepping down amid ethics questions after seven terms. In that GOP primary, Timothy Baldermann, who is both New Lenox mayor and Chicago Ridge police chief, was far ahead of his two opponents.

Democratic state Senate Majority Leader Debbie Halvorson and Green Party newcomer Jason Wallace had their party's backing for the general election.

In the 18th Congressional District, state Rep. Aaron Schock of Peoria, who at 26 is one of the youngest members in the Legislature, won a decisive victory for the GOP nomination to replace LaHood, of Peoria, who is stepping down after seven terms. Democrats promised to have a fall opponent for the GOP nominee.
