Fox Valley district wants your support

The Fox Valley Park District is asking the voters on Feb. 5 whether they will support the acquisition of open space and improvements to parks, sports fields and Blackberry Farm. Maintaining the investment in our homes by preserving open space ensures the quality of life that Fox Valley Park District residents value. Our homes are our largest investment, and clean air, water and a healthy environment help maintain and increase the value of that investment.

I live along the Waubonsie Creek nature trail, and I see residents of all ages using the trail -- whether running, walking, biking or Rollerblading -- at all times of the year. The funds from the referendum will accelerate the improvement of this well-used trail and other neighborhood parks, giving residents the opportunity to bike, walk, run and picnic in areas close to home.

Near and dear to my heart is the acquisition of property along the Fox River. The Fox Valley Park District was actually established as a Pleasure Driveway and Park District in 1947 to save the shoreline of the Fox River. During my 10-year tenure on the park district board of trustees, I have been supportive of efforts to acquire as much of this land as possible with the limited funds available. Along with partnerships with other entities of government -- such as the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Kane County Board and the cities of Aurora, North Aurora and Montgomery -- these referendum funds will give the board the ability to acquire land that becomes available.

There is no better time to purchase land than now. Passing this referendum will give your Fox Valley Park District Board of Trustees the capability of purchasing land while the market is favorable.

The Fox Valley Park District has been a good steward of taxpayer dollars, and the board will continue to spend your funds wisely. A public audit will be conducted to ensure the tax dollars are spent wisely.

About $2 per month is a small price to pay for acquiring open space and protecting the Fox River, providing trails and fishing access, and improving and renovating neighborhood parks and playgrounds throughout the community.

I urge you to vote yes on this important quality of life issue and support the Fox Valley Park District referendum Tuesday.

Rose D. Smilgys
