False alarm after men report gang activity in Itasca

The flurry of police activity in downtown Itasca Friday morning turned out to be a false alarm, authorities said.

Itasca police Sgt. Russ Crotty said two men passing out fliers in the area had reported seeing men in a gray Dodge Intrepid flash gang signs as they drove by. The men also said they saw a weapon passed to the front from the back seat of the car.

Police located the vehicle near Center Street and Walnut Avenue, pulled it over and made the passengers get out and lie face down on the ground while officers had their guns drawn, Crotty said.

But a subsequent search of the car determined there was no weapon, and the men were released.

The episode occurred shortly before noon Friday, according to police reports.
