Man charged with DUI in Kane Co. crash
A Chicago man was arrested and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol after causing a five-car accident on Route 72 Saturday.
Patrick Gengler, public information officer for the Kane County sheriff's office, said Santos Christian Romero-Villagrana, 23, of Chicago, was traveling east on Route 72 when he struck two stopped vehicles waiting to turn into a driveway. The accident happened at about 12:15 p.m.
He said it is unclear how two additional vehicles were involved in the accident.
Seven people were transported to area hospitals following the accident, Perez said.
Three were sent to Provena St. Joseph Hospital, three were sent to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, and one was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Conditions on all the injured were unknown.
Villagrana was charged with two counts of aggravated DUI, both felonies. He was also charged with driving without a valid driver's license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
The crash remains under investigation, Gengler said.
