Geneva approves list of streets up for repair

And the winners are …

The Geneva City Council Tuesday approved the list of local streets that will be repaved this summer, using $625,000 in state motor fuel tax money.

The top asphalt surface of the streets will be milled off, and replaced with fresh asphalt. This is not a total reconstruction of the street, as the stone base below will remain. Portions of some curbs and sidewalks may be replaced.

The next step is to solicit bids for contractors to do the work. Depending on how prices come in, sections of up to 32 streets may be repaved.

First Ward Alderman Charles Brown asked whether there is money elsewhere in the city budget to repair streets not on the list, such as those pocked with numerous potholes this winter. "It's just insidious," he said, saying west State Street, which runs through his ward, was in especially bad shape.

The city does have money to do potholes and crack filling, said city engineer Jason Elias. Tuesday's resolution is one of two ways the city can designate how it is spending motor fuel tax money, as required by the state. The other is to note, on a project-by-project basis, how the MFT money is spent for equipment, workers and supplies.

How long pavement lasts depends largely on the quality of the stone base and the amount and type of traffic on the street, said Jason Elias, city engineer. Garbage trucks, in particular, kill streets because of their weight, he said.
