Butch clutch for Badgers; Falker, Salukis stun Drake

Indiana couldn't get a break Wednesday. Not from the NCAA, not from visiting Wisconsin, and in some cases, not even from its fans.

Brian Butch's surprise banked 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left ended one of the darkest days in Indiana basketball history as No. 15 Wisconsin held on for a 68-66 victory over the 13th-ranked Hoosiers (20-4, 9-2).

During the final 96 seconds, the lead changed seven times, the last coming after Butch and Marcus Landry botched a handoff near the arc. Butch grabbed the ball, fired and banked it in.

"We did not diagram the bank," said Badgers coach Bo Ryan. "I don't think any of our other guys would have banked it."

Less than 12 hours before tipoff, school officials released a report from the NCAA which accused coach Kelvin Sampson of committing five "major" rules violations.

Sampson received a mixed reaction from the crowd when he was introduced before the game.

"Nothing outside of us hurt our team," said Hoosiers forward D.J. White. "We were a family tonight. Tonight didn't have anything to do with anything, we just didn't win."

Butch took care of that with his timely, but unplanned, 3-pointer.

Jason Bohannon finished with 18 points, all on 3-pointers, and Michael Flowers had 15 points, including three 3s, for the Badgers (20-4, 10-2 Big Ten).

The slugfest, which included 17 lead changes and six ties, was overshadowed by the newest alleged transgressions of Sampson, Indiana's second-year coach.

White, who had 17 points and 8 rebounds, insisted it had no impact. Freshman Eric Gordon, who finished with 23 points, didn't even discuss it in the postgame news conference.

SIU 65, Drake 62: Randal Falker had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and host Southern Illinois snapped No. 14 Drake's 21-game winning streak.

Leonard Houston's 3-pointer that could have sent the game into overtime bounced off the rim at the buzzer.

Josh Young had 17 points for Drake (22-2, 13-1), which could have clinched the Missouri Valley Conference's regular-season title with a victory. The Bulldogs' other loss was 72-66 to Saint Mary's, Calif. on Nov. 11.

Bryan Mullins added 13 points for Southern Illinois (13-12, 8-6).

UConn 84, Notre Dame 78: A.J. Price scored 26 points, and No. 17 host Connecticut won its eighth straight game, beating No. 20 Notre Dame.

The Huskies (19-5, 8-3 Big East) survived a 32-point effort from Notre Dame's Luke Harangody, who also had 16 rebounds.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Irish (18-5, 8-3).

Price was 10 of 19 from the field and had four 3-pointers and 9 assists. Craig Austrie had 14 points, and Jeff Adrien added 13 points and 9 rebounds for Connecticut.

UConn trailed most of the game and was down 70-66 when Gavin Edwards blocked a shot, leading to a dunk by Doug Wiggins that brought the crowd to its feet. On the next Huskies' possession, Edwards made 2 free throws to tie the game at 70-70 with 4:48 left.

UConn took a 79-74 lead with 1:54 to play when Stanley Robinson hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired.

The Huskies then made enough free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

Harangody, who came in leading the Big East in scoring at over 20 points per game, had 22 in the second half, including the first 10 Irish points after intermission. But Notre Dame couldn't stretch its lead past 6 points.

Memphis 68, Houston 59: Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 22 points, and No. 1 Memphis rallied from its first halftime deficit since Dec. 4 to remain undefeated with a victory over visiting Houston.

The Tigers (24-0, 10-0) have won 47 straight games on their home floor, 53 in a row in the regular season and 33 straight in Conference USA.

Robert McKiver had 21 points for Houston (18-5, 7-2), which had won three straight.

Duke 77, Maryland 65: Freshman Kyle Singler scored a season-high 26 points, and No. 2 Duke withstood visiting Maryland's comeback attempt for its 12th straight win.

Greg Paulus added 20 points for the Blue Devils (22-1, 10-0 Atlantic Coast Conference), who blew most of a 16-point lead but used an 11-2 run to snap Maryland's four-game winning streak.

Greivis Vasquez scored 25 points for the Terrapins (16-9, 6-4), while James Gist -- who averaged 22 points over the last six games -- was held to 9 points on 3-of-11 shooting.

Tennessee 93, Arkansas 71: JaJuan Smith scored 32 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead No. 4 Tennessee to rout over visiting Arkansas.

Tyler Smith and Wayne Chism both added 15 points for the Volunteers (22-2, 9-1 Southeastern Conference), while Duke Crews had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Sonny Weems had 20 points for Arkansas (17-6, 6-3).
