Man pleads guilty to theft: A judge has sentenced Artures Slizevicius, 19, to a year of probation and community service for his role in a October 2007 Buffalo Grove townhouse burglary. Slizevicius, of the 0-100 block of Mohawk Trail in Buffalo Grove, pleaded guilty Monday to misdemeanor theft, reduced from felony possession of stolen property. He faced up to a year in prison. Authorities say codefendant Arturas Sigajevas, 18, who's been charged with residential burglary, broke into the townhouse, stole cash and electronics and gave some of the items to Slizevicius to hide. Sigajevas is to appear in court Feb. 19.
Court: Cop owed disability:
An Illinois appellate court upheld a lower court's decision that a Des Plaines police officer should get disability pay for a shoulder injury suffered in 1999 when he lifted a malfunctioning train gate. Officer George Sarkis returned to full duty and re-injured his left shoulder in July 2000 jumping over a chain-link fence in pursuit of a suspect. He had surgery on that shoulder in 2003. A city pension board found in 2004 that the railroad crossing gate incident did not occur "in the performance of an act of duty." A circuit court ruled that Sarkis was entitled to a line-of-duty pension. The appellate court agreed in a ruling issued Friday.
