Sting nets huge cocaine cache, guns

Roughly 12.7 pounds of cocaine with a street value of $1.7 million has been seized in a sting that targeted a drug ring operating in Kane, DuPage and parts of Cook counties, authorities said Thursday.

Two people also were arrested on drug offenses after police raided a home late Feb. 22 at 1817 Poplar Ave. in Hanover Park, and also found a submachine gun, rifles and cash, according to the Kane County sheriff's department.

A man and woman, Rene Favela, 29, and Eva Alvarado, 28, are charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver -- Class X felonies, the sheriff's department said in a statement.

They remained in Cook County jail on $1 million bond each Thursday night.

The drug seizure is part of a three-month probe led by the Kane County sheriff's special operations unit. The DuPage County sheriff's narcotics unit and Cook County sheriff's police also took part in the investigation.

Kane County Sheriff Pat Perez called the operation "a prime example of what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together to accomplish a common goal."

In addition to the large cocaine stash, deputies seized more than $3,000 cash, a MAC-10 submachine gun, two rifles and five vehicles.

Favela and Alvarado both have March 21 court dates in Rolling Meadows.
