Briefs: County amends budget

More than 100 DuPage County public safety jobs were salvaged from the chopping block Friday when the county board amended its budget in the wake of an expected $20 million sales tax windfall. The county was anticipating having to lay off 120 employees as well as leave another 100-plus jobs go unfilled for the year if a sales tax increase hadn't been approved by state legislators as part of a mass transit bailout package. Annually the tax hike is expected to generate close to $48 million, but this year the county will only collect about half that since it won't go into effect until around July. The board will hold a number of special meetings in the coming weeks to debate other amendments to this year's budget.
