Two victims of apparent drug overdose identified
The two Carpentersville men who died over the weekend of an apparent drug overdose today were identified as former Dundee-Crown High School students.
Eric Landeros, 18, of the 100 block of North Grove Avenue and Florencio Reyes Jr., 20, of the 300 block of Tulsa Avenue, and had been together Saturday night when they apparently ingested oxycodone, a pain killer used to relieve severe to moderate pain, police said.
Oxycodone was one of the drugs doctors found in 28-year-old actor Heath Ledger's system when he died of a drug overdose last month, according to reports.
The drug hasn't been linked to any other deaths in Carpentersville and police continue to investigate where the men got it from.
Police also are questioning a third person who took oxycodone over the weekend with Landeros and Reyes and has since been released from a local hospital, said Cmdr. Michael Kilbourne.
"We don't have any solid answers or anything that we can confidently release," he said.
Reyes and Landeros had both attended Dundee-Crown High School in the past but weren't current students, according to Allison Smith, a spokeswoman for Community Unit District 300.
Principal Lynn McCarthy is scheduled to announce their deaths to students this afternoon, while reminding them of the evils of both illegal and prescription drugs, Smith said.
Counselors will be available as needed, Smith said.
Police say that on Sunday at 8:58 a.m., police and paramedics responded to the 300 block of Tulsa Avenue, where they found Reyes unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at Sherman Hospital in Elgin.
At 2:45 p.m., police and paramedics were called to the 100 block of North Grove Street, where Landeros was pronounced dead.
Though it appears the two men overdosed on the prescription drug, the coroner's office has run toxicology tests and an autopsy to confirm that.
Police urge anyone who runs across oxycodone to use it only when prescribed by a doctor and according to its instructions.
