Officer killed during crime spree named Deputy of the Year
SPRINGFIELD -- A central Illinois sheriff's deputy allegedly shot by two men during a multi-county crime spree last June has been named 2007 Deputy of the Year.
Douglas County Chief Deputy Tommy "T.K." Martin died of his injuries about a month after the June 21st incident.
Douglas County Sheriff Charlie McGrew nominated Martin for the Illinois Sheriffs' Association award. He says the honor recognizes the courage, loyalty and honor Martin displayed.
Two Chicago men have pleaded not guilty to murder charges in Martin's death.
