Suburban cop released after fatal shooting

Chicago police say they have released without charges an off-duty suburban police officer involved in a fatal shooting on the city's South Side.

Police News Affairs Officer David Banks said the officer from south suburban Robbins feared for his life when he was confronted on the sidewalk late Sunday night by a gun-wielding 35-year-old Cornell McKinney. Banks said the officer drew his own gun and shot McKinney, striking him in the chest and abdomen.

Banks said he could not immediately confirm a report in the Chicago Sun-Times that McKinney was the husband of the officer's former wife, and that the wife had called the officer to complain about McKinney's treatment of her children.
