North Barrington attorney sent to prison for nearly 10 years

A North Barrington attorney charged with breaking into his ex-wife's Hawthorn Woods home and threatening her and their daughter with a gun was sentenced Thursday to nearly 10 years in prison.

Raymond Clutts, 57, also will serve three years in Lake County's periodic imprisonment program after being released from the Illinois Department of Corrections. He'll be on probation for four years after leaving prison.

The 9-year, 11-month prison sentence was part of a plea deal worked out with the Lake County state's attorney's office before Judge Victoria Rossetti.

Under the deal, Clutts pleaded guilty to attempted home invasion and aggravated discharge of a firearm. He had faced up to 50 years in prison if convicted on the initial charges, which also included home invasion, reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Authorities said Clutts entered his ex-wife's house with a gun in November 2014 and fired shots into the ceiling. His former wife and daughter escaped without injuries, police said.

Hawthorn Woods police arrested Clutts outside the home after shooting him with a stun gun. He has been held at the Lake County jail since his arrest.
