Geneva planning traffic signal near shopping center

Shoppers may find one of Geneva's busy shopping center intersections a little less stressful by this summer.

A traffic signal is in the works at Bricher Road and Geneva Commons Drive, an area that sees traffic from the Geneva Commons shopping center, Lowe's and other nearby stores.

"This is something that is urgently needed," said Geneva Alderman Ron Singer. "From the get go we've had grave concerns about this intersection."

Funds for the installation of a traffic signal would be drawn partly from the city's proposed 2008-2009 capital improvement allocation generated by Geneva's 2008 sales tax increase.

Additional funding for the project would likely be shared between Geneva and St. Charles.

Singer is also hoping that future developments in the as-yet undeveloped tracts of land located west of the intersection will absorb some of the cost.

"We'd like to take into consideration the additional development that will take place," Singer said. "There is talk of residential and commercial developments eventually going in. They will be influencing traffic patterns in that area and should be part of renumerating the cost of this project."

The Geneva Commons Drive and Bricher Road intersection is just west of the Randall Road and Bricher Road intersection.

"Since the two traffic lights will be so close to each other there is the potential for problems with traffic stacking up at the lights," said Singer. "That will have to be rectified with engineering."
