FBI steps up murder probe
The FBI says it is investigating "an ongoing gang problem" in the West suburban Maywood that is believed to be connected to the 2006 slaying of Thomas Wood, the first officer slain on duty in town's history. Wood, a 37-year-old father of five, was killed in October 2006. He was found slumped over his steering wheel with his window rolled down, his SUV in park and his police dog inside, unharmed. Wood was active in the police department's effort to eliminate gang activity and it is believed his slaying was related to those efforts. FBI spokesman Ross Rice said the FBI has more manpower now, so it is able to examine whether there is a gang-violence connection to Wood's death.
