Limit letters to opinions please

For some time I have noticed that not only are letters getting longer, pushing to the edges of the 500-word limit (maybe beyond that), but also, in many instances, being what could be press release material. An excellent example is a letter in the Jan. 1 Fence Post titled "Market topic of forum on Thursday."

Mr. Sarich's letter should have been sent in the form of a press release and been treated as such.

From what I recall from Journalism 101, letters to the editor should reflect the opinions of the readers, not be news releases. Also, if the Daily Herald would limit letters to 500 words as stated on the Opinion Page, or perhaps 300 words, more than the usual two letters per day could be published.
