Olympic construction would cost Chicago $900 million ... or more

New and temporary venues to host the 2016 Olympic Games on Chicago's downtown lakefront and in nearby neighborhoods will cost an estimated $900 million, organizers said Tuesday.

The estimated price tag was released after organizers sent a detailed questionnaire about the games to the International Olympic Committee.

Details also emerged Tuesday about the other six bid cities' plans, including Tokyo, which said 95 percent of its competition venues would be within five miles of downtown.

Chicago's price tag is likely to grow if history is any guide. Staging the 2012 London Olympics is now more than more triple the original estimates and tops $19 billion.
