Rockies' Tulowitzki signs for $31 million
Troy Tulowitzki went into spring training last season just hoping to secure a spot on the Colorado Rockies' roster.
That won't be a concern this season. Tulowitzki and the NL champions finalized a $31 million, six-year contract on Wednesday that includes a club option for the 2014 season.
"It's surreal," Tulowitzki said. "It's awesome."
Tulowitzki, 23, gets $750,000 in each of the next two seasons, $3.5 million in 2010, $5.5 million in 2011, $8.5 million in 2012 and $10 million in 2013. The Rockies have a $15 million option for 2014 with a $2 million buyout.
Extension for Padres GM Towers: San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers received a two-year contract extension Wednesday that runs through 2010 and is thought to put him among the top five or six highest-paid GMs in baseball. The team wouldn't divulge financial details.
This off-season, Towers became the longest-tenured active GM in the big leagues. His current deal was set to end after the 2008 season.
Knoblauch not located: Former major-leaguer Chuck Knoblauch had not been tracked down as of early Wednesday evening by federal marshals trying to serve him a subpoena from a House panel investigating steroids in baseball, a committee staffer told The Associated Press.
Knoblauch, a four-time All-Star who played for the Yankees, Twins and Royals from 1991-02, originally was asked to appear Thursday for what was supposed to be the first of five depositions or transcribed interviews scheduled by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
