Brief: Executive director named

Vernon LaVia, the co-founder and board president of Carpenter's Place, an Aurora organization that provides social services to the near-homeless, has been named the interim executive director. He replaces Steve Luckman, who resigned earlier this month to explore other employment opportunities. LaVia will remain the interim head until a new executive director comes on board. His position as president of the board will be filled by David Zinn, outreach pastor at Ginger Creek Community Church in Aurora and currently vice president of the board.

Glenbard gets lacrosse

Glenbard West High School will have an official girls lacrosse program. School board members in Glenbard High School District 87 voted to official recognize the competitive sports team and apply with the Illinois High School Association for registration as an emerging sport.

Where to stay warm

During normal business hours, Monday through Friday, Naperville residents can seek shelter from the elements at the municipal center, 400 S. Eagle St. Other shelters are available at county administrative buildings, libraries, park district facilities, senior centers, shopping malls and township offices. Several state facilities will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Sunday for anyone seeking refuge from the cold. The facilities include all tollway oases and Department of Human Services Family Community Resource Centers at 146 W. Roosevelt Road, Suite 2, in Villa Park, and 3235 W. Belvidere Road, in Park City. For relief from inclement conditions after hours and on weekends, residents are encouraged to visit any of Naperville's nine fire stations. Officials request that residents who have at-risk friends, neighbors or relatives help by checking on them periodically. Anyone needing assistance should call city dispatch at (630) 420-6187. In case of an emergency, call 911 immediately.
