Former auditors indicted
Three former state tax auditors have been indicted on charges of taking $25,500 in payoffs in exchange for referring clients to an attorney, federal prosecutors announced Wednesday. The attorney, Dean Roupas, 36, of suburban Burbank also was charged in the indictment with making the payments to the three former tax auditors. The auditors, all former employees of the state Department of Revenue, were identified as Michael Krol, Chuck Maali, 44, of Oak Lawn and Leo Langley, 55. Krol's age and Langley's hometown were not immediately available. Messages seeking comment were left for three of the accused men's attorneys. Another lawyer's line was being checked, according to the phone company, and he could not be reached. According to the four-count indictment, the Department of Revenue has rules against auditors accepting any gift worth more than $50.
