Here's the latest on south side of Randall Road corridor

Last week we filled you in on what's happening along the northern end of the Randall Road corridor in 2008.

This week, we'll head south.

The new year could bring a Goodwill retail store to Carpentersville along Randall, Village Manager Craig Anderson said. The business recently submitted a petition to build the store next to Woodman's on the west side of the road.

Across Randall, near the Walgreens at Binnie Road, a new retail center is expected to open in 2008, which will likely include a bank and a fast food business, Anderson said.

Eventually, the village also is hoping to see some commercial development north of Platt Hill Nursery, but so far nothing is concrete, Anderson said.

Elgin's plans: Just to the south in Elgin, many new commercial projects are brewing, said Ray Moller, the city's economic development and business services coordinator.

One project that is sure to get under way in 2008 is the new auto mall north of the Tollway, Moller said.

Also north of the Tollway, The Grove development, on the west side of Randall, is expected to fill up with many new retail businesses and restaurants.

South of the Tollway, the biggest project will be the Super Wal-Mart at Bowes and Randall roads. Construction will begin on the supercenter this year, with the store expected to open some time in 2009. When the store does open, the existing Wal-Mart site will be redeveloped. However, Moller said nothing will happen on that project until the new Wal-Mart opens.

The Elgin area also will likely see other new commercial development in 2008, though nothing is official yet, Moller said.

"There's stuff out there cooking," Moller said. "There is significant interest in the whole corridor."

Big and small: Much of the Randall frontage in South Elgin has already been developed.

However, there will be some new big box stores coming to the community in 2008.

Just north of the Super Target, crews are starting to move earth for a Dick's Sporting Goods store, an LA Fitness and a third soon-to-be revealed tenant.

"That's our last spot for big box retail," said Steve Super, South Elgin's director of community development. "There will be a series of smaller business that come in, but those are the two big ones so far."
