K-State upsets Kansas

Kansas State fans had come to call it The Streak, 24 years of homecourt futility against Kansas.

All they had to do was wait for one of the greatest players in school history to be born and come to their rescue.

Michael Beasley, who wasn't even alive when the Jayhawks began their 24-game winning streak in the Little Apple, scored 25 points Wednesday night and led the No. 22 Wildcats to an 84-75 victory over previously unbeaten Kansas, touching off a mob scene on center court in Manhattan, Kan.

"I know it means a lot around the city, people at the school," said Beasley, who's become a candidate for player of the year as the nation's leading rebounder and No. 4 scorer. "But it's just a game to me."

Freshman guard Jacob Pullen had 20 points and freshman forward Bill Walker 22, making sure that Beasley, who had guaranteed a Kansas State victory, did not have to eat his words.

"I knew my team was capable of beating anybody," Beasley said. "And we showed it tonight."

Always double- and sometimes triple-teamed when he touched the ball inside, Beasley was held to only 8 points in the first half but scored 6 in a row in the first few minutes after intermission and No. 2 Kansas (20-1, 5-1 Big 12) never caught up.

Beasley was 4-for-4 from behind the 3-point arc as the Wildcats (15-4, 5-0) took over first place in a Big 12 conference they've never even competed in, let alone won.

Kansas, two victories short of matching the best start in its storied basketball history, lost on its rival's homecourt for the first time since 1983. The 24-game streak in an opponent's gym came within one of tying the NCAA Division I record which UCLA set against California from 1961-85.

Memphis 89, Houston 77: Chris Douglas-Roberts scored 30 points and Joey Dorsey grabbed 22 rebounds, matching a career high, as top-ranked Memphis (20-0, 6-0 Conference USA) equaled the best start in school history with an 89-77 win over host Houston (15-4, 4-1). Robert Dozier 17 of his 21 points in the second half and the Tigers overcame a season-high 22 turnovers to extend their regular-season winning streak to 39 games. Memphis matched its best start since 1985-86 and won its 15th consecutive road game.

Georgetown 74, St. John's 42: Sophomore reserve Vernon Macklin scored a career-high 18 points, and No. 6 Georgetown (17-2, 7-1) handed host St. John's (7-12, 1-7) its worst Big East loss ever. St. John's had its worst shooting game in a season where it ranks next-to-last in the 16-team Big East at 42.2 percent. The Red Storm finished 10-for-47 from the field (21.3 percent) in losing their sixth straight overall and eighth in their last nine games.

Texas A&M 80, Texas 63: Josh Carter scored 19 points, and host No. 23 Texas A&M (17-4, 3-3 Big 12) cruised to an easy win over No. 10 Texas (16-4, 3-2). Carter has scored at least 10 points in 15 straight games and helped A&M break a three-game winning streak for rival Texas, continuing a four-year tradition of the home team winning each game in this series.

Purdue 51, Iowa 50: Keaton Grant made the winning free throw with 1.4 seconds left, and host Purdue (16-5, 7-1 Big Ten) held off Iowa (10-12, 3-6). Purdue got the ball with five seconds left and the score tied at 50-50. Grant took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the floor before he was fouled by Iowa's Tony Freeman. Grant made the first free throw, then intentionally missed the second because Iowa was out of timeouts. Purdue secured the rebound and ran out the clock.

Bradley 63, Indiana St. 44: Jeremy Crouch had 13 points to lead host Bradley (12-10, 5-5 Missouri Valley) over Indiana State (10-10, 5-5). Daniel Ruffin added 12 points and Theron Wilson had 11 points for Bradley, which led 24-19 at halftime. Matt Salley had nine rebounds. Despite the final score, Indiana State stayed close in the first half. The lead changed twice during the game and the score was tied three times.

N. Iowa 69, Illinois St. 61: Eric Coleman scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as host Northern Iowa (13-8, 5-5 Missouri Valley) beat Illinois State (15-6, 7-3). Northern Iowa's biggest lead was 6 until closing the game on a 8-0 run. The game featured nine ties and eight lead changes.

Women

Connecticut 71, S. Florida 48: At Hartford, Conn., Maya Moore scored 23 points and Renee Montgomery 21 as top-ranked Connecticut (20-0, 7-0 Big East) beat South Florida (11-9, 1-6), giving the Huskies 20 wins for the 15th consecutive season.

Baylor 61, Texas 60: Angela Tisdale scored 19 points, including a game-winning 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, and host No. 6 Baylor (19-1, 7-0 Big 12) beat No. 25 Texas (15-6, 3-4).
