Tonight, the League of Women Voters of the Palatine Area will present a discussion of the Constitutional Convention question appearing on Tuesday's ballot, and the reasons why the League of Women Voters of the State of Illinois is urging a "no" vote. Sharon Alter, co-chair of the League's Constitutional Convention Study Committee, will explain the study and take questions from the audience. The event is at 7 p.m. tonight, Oct. 30, at the Palatine Public Library, 700 N. North Court. The league is a nonpartisan organization.
Citizens group wins award:
The Wheeling Police Department's Citizens Patrol Group received a Governor's Hometown Award at a recent ceremony in Springfield. The group consists of Citizens Police Academy graduates who volunteer to patrol village streets and parks. Each member of the 24-hour group has completed an 8-hour orientation class and is required to patrol a minimum of four hours a month. The group has been together since 2000 and has put in more than 14,000 hours of volunteer time.
Police learn about autism:
Buffalo Grove police recently started departmentwide training about autism. The training is designed to give officers insight understanding and interacting with individuals with autism. The department has also started a voluntary in-house database that will provide information on who in the community has autism. The department will use the database in instances where someone gets lost or is the victim of a crime. Officials hope the information will help them understand how to calmly approach someone with autism. To become a part of the program, contact Investigator Staci Kupsak at (847) 459-2560.
