Aurora police charge man in Jan. 4 shooting

Aurora police and the Kane County state's attorney have charged a 17-year-old Aurora man with aggravated battery with a firearm in connection with a Jan. 4 shooting that injured one person.

Markell T. Webb, of the 1300 Block of Beau Ridge Drive, Aurora, was taken into custody at his home without incident on Thursday, police said Friday.

Webb is the alleged driver of a vehicle that pulled alongside one that was occupied by two cousins about 1:35 a.m. Jan. 4 at Fifth Avenue and Union Street.

One of two passengers in Webb's vehicle leaned out of a window and fired numerous shots at the victim's vehicle, one of which hit the 18-year-old driver in the arm causing a non-life threatening wound, police said.

The other occupant of the victim vehicle, a 21-year-old man, was not injured.

Since it is an ongoing investigation, police said they cannot elaborate on how they were led to Webb's alleged involvement. His bond was set at $500,000 Friday in the Aurora Branch Court.

He was expected to be transferred Friday to the Kane County Correctional Center in Geneva.

His next court date is Feb. 14 at the Kane County Judicial Center in St. Charles.

Police continue to look for the two men that were allegedly with Webb at the time of the shooting. The motive for the incident appears to be gang-related, although neither victim had any apparent gang affiliation.
